Health problems - The Placebo effect
For centuries the medical science has developed dramatically, bringing humankind brilliant achievements in medical services. We consume medicines everyday, but little do we actually know about the history of drugs and their use. For some illnesses, consuming drugs is obligatory, however it is not true in all cases. The Placebo, or also known as the Placebo effect, is an example of how dubious the medicine consuming act can be.Placebo effect has a history of more than 2 centuries, beginning from the middle of the 18th century where Quincy dictionary defined the Latin-rooted word as “any medicine adapted more to please than to benefit the patient”. It is now quite a popular way to give treatment to patients who think they are having serious illnesses but was not diagnosed with any disease, in order to please the patients and stabilize their psychological mind. Funny as it may sound, “common placebos include inert tablets, vehicle infusions, sham surgery, and other procedures based on false information” (Wikipedia). However, there were recorded cases in which the patients’ condition actually improved after receiving this kind of treatment.

It is still a subject of controversy whether the Placebo effect should be apply medically in professional medical services, but it has been proved to have certain influences to the subject’s health. This is mainly due to the mechanism of the brain reacting to the medicines that patients have taken. In Placebo effect, although the patients have been given inert drugs, they are not informed so, therefore leading themselves to believe in the actual effect of the drugs. The patient will have the belief that they will eventually be cured and the condition will be improved, despite the fact that those kinds of drugs are of completely no influence. This can be considered as a therapeutic effect/treatment.
